Wrought Iron vs. Aluminium Driveway Gates - Which is the Best Material?

There are a lot of factors to consider when choosing a new gate or fence for your property, and arguably the most important among them is the material you choose for your gate.

We have been creating bespoke wrought iron since 1965, and have recently added aluminium driveway gates to our range, but which material is the better choice for your driveway gates?

If our experience has taught us anything, it’s that there are pros and cons to both metals, and the best choice of material completely depends on your individual needs. To help make your decision easier, let’s take a look at the pros and cons of wrought iron and aluminium for driveway gates.

Aluminium Driveway Gates

Aluminium gates are very easy to install due to their lightweight nature, meaning the process of having your gates erected is as quick and easy as can be.
However, if you need your gate to sit atop sloped ground, this can be a tough challenge to overcome with aluminium, meaning another material might be better suited to your project.

Aluminium also has the advantage of being an extremely low maintenance material. If you want a fence that you can forget about once it has been installed, aluminium is the perfect choice.

If you require a high level of privacy from your gate, aluminium is a great option due to the fact it can be constructed similarly to classic wooden gates; precision cut and joined from component parts to create a solid gate with minimal visibility.

One drawback of aluminium is in its strength. If you expect your driveway gates to go through a lot of wear and tear, it might be worth considering wrought iron as this is much more durable as a gate material.

Wrought Iron Driveway Gates

One of the best features of wrought iron for driveway gates is its appearance. A wrought iron driveway gate is stylish and timeless; if you love the classic look, this is the material for you.
And, due to the bespoke nature of our wrought iron driveway gates, we can create a product that has been designed to your exact tastes, whatever they may be. If you want a traditional material but with a contemporary design, there is no better option than bespoke wrought iron driveway gates.

Wrought iron is without a doubt the most durable and hard-wearing material you can choose for a driveway gate. It’s strength will stand the test of time, so if security is a major concern or you believe your gate might take some damage over the years, wrought iron is the necessary choice to make sure your gate stays in top condition.

Wrought iron does require a little bit more maintenance than aluminium (but not a lot!). All our wrought iron products are galvanised to prevent the formation of rust for up to 10 years, but if you maintain your wrought iron driveway gate correctly, it could easily last a lifetime.

You can rest assured that whichever material you choose, our in-house team of professional installers will fit a quality product to an exceptional standard.
